As most of you know and can see, both the portfolio and blog are in the stage of updating and expansion––the full revamp is right around the corner. If you want to keep up on the progress and daily iPhone snaps, follow me on twitter. With the site updates will be a series of new images for the portfolio. I’d like to get feedback from you about these photos. Here are the two simple questions that I have for you. If you will, post a short message down below answering in short, these two questions:

Which image is your favorite?

Which image is your least favorite and why?

I enjoy all sorts of feedback so feel free to leave your full opinion or suggestions as well. Your different views on the photos will help decide whether or not to include these in my new portfolio. Having said that, lets get to voting. Each image is marked with a number that you can reference via the comments.

Songs for Singing + Bon Iver

Note: Everybody likes great music––I’ve been gathering a lot of new music lately and have some great songs to share. I will be putting these songs in future posts with a “songs for singing” tag so they can be searched.

Bon Iver (pronounced: bohn eevair; French for “good winter”) is a greeting, a celebration and a sentiment. It is a new statement of an artist moving on and establishing the groundwork for a lasting career. He––Justin Vernon, the head of the band––is also one of my favorite musicians/singers because of his uniqueness in vocals and the vocal range he uses.

Vernon’s music was recorded while living in a remote cabin in the woods of Northern Wisconsin for three months and slowly began to fill his days with twelve-hours of recording music. The end result of his attempts is his current album, ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’. The beauty of Vernon’s music is that he uses old recording equipment, giving it a crisp and raw feel that really makes the music what it is—edgy, awesome, and relaxing.

Arcade Magazine

December 19th, 2008

Arcade is an architecture, design, and photo magazine with some really great pictures. I picked up a few of the magazines because the December issue has a half page Glazers ad that uses one of my images. It was shot along Clearwater River by Orofino, Idaho.

Malcolm Gladwell – Outliers: The Story of Success

The first time listening to this talk by Malcolm Gladwell at the 2008 AIGA Business Design Conference was eye opening. The first few minutes of the video pulled me in as Josh Liberson steps onto the stage, introduces himself, and then proceeds to tell us of how Malcolm knows nothing of design. Malcolm then comes to the stage and starts speaking about Fleetwood Mac–I’d never heard of the band at this point–and I began to wonder where he was going with the topic.

It’s not until the second and third time listening in that you’ll really start to process what Malcolm is saying and how to apply it. So lets back up and look at his points main points:

Dedicate at least 10,000 hours to whatever it is you’re trying to master.

Only 10,000 hours? Well, yes. If you look at the time it takes to master something, it takes about 10,000 hours–that’s roughly four hours a day for ten years. It’s not to say that creativity and mastership of a profession can’t be had overnight or in a shorter period of time, but it just doesn’t happen for most people unless they’re solving a problem that can be summed up that simply.

Malcolm then goes on to say that the choice of profession is not trivial–I agree. The example that Malcolm uses is that if you decide to be a teacher, being a great teacher is not something that simply happens. It is something that comes out of an investment of your time (10,000 hours) and the things you’re a part of. You can’t just walk in and become a teacher and be great at it. It simply doesn’t work like that. The same goes for being a designer, photographer, or a profession in any other field. It takes time to learn and and develop each of the creative tasks and then solve them.

Additionally, someone could invest a large amount of time to a profession and still be terrible. You have to take into account the quality of the time and the underlying intent for spending that time.

Twenty Four + Frame

As promised a few months ago, I’ve mounted my picture frame on the wall and put twenty four, 4 x 6’s in the frame. After spending nearly 5 hours sorting through photos, buying paper and mounting the frame, I decided that I’ve already devoted most of the daylight hours to doing this blog post. It has been a long journey, but I’ve come through.

I’ve posted some shots of the frame in action and filled with fun 4 x 6’s. While looking through Aperture I had a chance to reflect upon images that I haven’t seen in months or actually even years for a few. Here are some of those images and a few that haven’t been shown but will be in my portfolio.

LG Action Sports Tour

November 4th, 2008

Shot lots of photos this weekend at the LG Action Sports Tour Championships. Lighting was rough and angles were tough but overall it was a good time. There was bmx, inline skating, skateboarding, shows from The Game, MXPX, Pennywise and Hoobastank.

Long Range Trigger

When I first purchased a set of Pocket Wizards, I thought that the 1600-foot range was a lot, but now that I’ve seen this new trigger I’m starting to see a bunch of new possibilities.

Robert Benson a Californian photographer, has come up with a brilliant trigger by using any normal hand held radio plugged into a camera’s shutter release port. The radio trigger can work up to twenty miles from the camera but it depends on what kind of radio you’re using and the objects in line-of-sight from the camera.

Keep in mind that this device is probably illegal considering the FCC prohibits you from using two-way radios to trigger another device. The device is patent pending and can be purchased here.

Make sure to check out the comments on Robert’s blog post about the triggers. There is some talk of using a cell phone to trigger the camera from possibly…around the world. Think it’s possible?

Downtown Throwdown

For the past two years Krush Kulesza from Snowboy Productions has been putting on a rail jam on the steps of Qwest Field. This year the Snowboy crew put on a great show again with riders Jed Anderson, Nick Dirks, Jarad Hadi, Scott Stevens, Austin Sweetin, Jonas Michilot, Austin Hironaka and a few others. The judges were Darrell Mathes, Jon Kooley and Austin Smith.

If you tell anyone in North America that you live in or are going to visit Seattle, Washington it will most likely evoke stories of endless rain and the sweet sweet sounds of grunge rock circa 1994.

It didn’t rain, but there was a few grunge rock songs that played. Here are a few photos from the night.

A day of Substance: Moving Day & Nacho Challenge

Our Friends over at Substance seem to be having some fun. They just moved into the new Substance Head Quarters. Some of their moving day was captured via flip cam.

All moved in and now they’re off to the Substance Nacho Challenge. I’m not sure if this was fun in the end, or if this was torture, but some things to know before you watch:
– Cory, Shaun and Erin are the competitors.
– Each container of nachos was from 711.
– There is no way these nachos tasted great.

Canon goes Avril
