Do you see bad links, errors or areas for improvement? Whether or not your idea is a design change or not is up to you, its your opinion. Maybe it’s even a suggestion about content type or a new music player that plays song after song in a post. Put your suggestion out on the table and I’ll do my best to step into your shoes as a viewer.

Murdock Young + Cutler Residence

The Cutler Residence–designed by Murdock-Young Architects and located in Montauk, New York–is a beautiful combination of wood paneling, concrete and dark metal helping it showcase its elegance.

It’s always interesting to know the client’s requirements for their home. In this case, the client requested that Murdock-Young design a house with a very minimal impact on the surrounding landscape and to maximize the views. Judging by the photos and open view, I think it’s safe to say that the view at sunset is nothing short of amazing.

Showcased Work: Shwood Website Design

These are just a few of the web designs done late last year for Shwood Eyewear out of Portland, Oregon. The website itself was to be built in HTML/CSS with jquery components and a full-browser Flash video player. This project is one of many more to be included in the new portfolio the next few weeks.

Canon 1d Mark IV: Nocturne + Sydney New years

Both of the above videos were shot on Canon’s newest DSLR, the 1d Mark IV. The videos look incredible, but what is absolutely jaw-dropping about the first video, Nocturne by Vincent Laforet, is that it was shot at ISO 6400 for nearly the whole video–some of the scenes were shot at ISO 3200 but all scenes used natural light sources.

The quality coming from the new 1d Mark IV is stunning. Prior to the 5d Mark II and Nikon D90 I was not super thrilled about video on DSLR’s. The main reason was that I didn’t see its potential. Now that these video capabilities are so well refined, I’d love to get ahold of a new DSLR. Just one more thing to add to this years wish list.

Crescendo + Ambient Moodcast + Mount Vision Mixes

Don’t you love it when you forget about certain tracks in your playlist and stumble upon them months later? It’s almost like finding gold, or better yet, greener pastures in music. I was fumbling through iTunes earlier this week and came across fellow designer and friend Alex Koplin’s extraordinary mixes. It’s been quite some time since I’ve relaxed to the soothing beauty of his Ambient Moodcast or the deep bass of the Crescendo Mix, but when I cranked up the volume, I realized I had to share their inspiration with you.

First up is a stunning creation that will make you want to jump about and start slappin’ da bass’. The mix is titled ‘Crescendo Deep House’ and is just over one hour long.

Wow, over an hour of the hottest cuts–didn’t you just love that mix? Next up is Alex’s amazing Ambient Moodgadget Moodcast. This is my favorite mix that he has created so far. When listening to this in the summer it gives off such a great vibe. I found myself often drifting freely out of mind but still maintaining complete focus on the work in front of me. The track list features Shigeto, A Setting Sun, Calmer and many more ambient favorites. You can check out the track listing here.

If you enjoy this mix as much as I do, let us know. Perhaps we can persuade Alex to create another.

Last but not least is the Mount Vision Mix. Even more ambient than the previous, this mix brings the sounds of nature into play. As I listen it conjures up ideas of meditation in wide open fields, birds chirping in the early morning sunlit trees, grass rolling in the breeze and thoughts of discovery as you walk through the forest. Even the faint voices in parts help shape the experience of Mount Vision–a place I’ve never been.

It even has a watermark is by far the finest collection of the business cards out there. Not to mention its one of the largest that I’ve found and one of the most inspiring. If you have the patience of clicking, sift through all of the cards, its well worth the time. Studio 8 At this Rate

When mixed, large type and beautiful images always get me. This project by Studio 8 blends the two together to form a beautiful booklet. It’s aim is to raise awareness about the destruction of the Amazon rain forest. The booklet is made from only one sheet of FSC certified paper, folding out from the cover into a 12-page concertina, maximizing the sheet usage and minimizing waste.

Nikon Submissions: Your Day in 140 seconds or less

NIkon’s 140 second film festival has been going on for a while now but now the submissions are closed and 50 finalists have been chosen. The final submissions will be judged by Chase Jarvis, Rainn Wilson and Justine Ezarik (iJustine) for the judges award of $100,000 but the audience award of $25,000 is really up to us–the persons video with the most views and highest rating will win this award.

Some of the submissions seem to stray from the original “your day” submission guideline and more towards a video showing off their work, but nevertheless they’re nicely done. The videos above, the first by Skill Lab and the second by Josh Friedberg, are my two favorites. Both are creative ways to look at your day. The the first “numbers” video especially. You can still see/know what is going on even though you’re only seeing a closeup shot.

Mozy on over to NikonFestival.com to watch a bunch more of the submissions. They are inspiring and may quite possibly spark some ideas for you.

How A Web Design Goes Straight To Hell

So you’re about to start the best project in the world and are thrilled to have it in your portfolio. Fast-forward twenty days and you’re now wishing that you’d never agreed to do this project because your client has forgotten why they hired you as a designer–to build something really great. It’s safe to say that that most of us in the industry have experienced a similar situation. Feel free to vent your story in the comments.

Arthur Erickson was an architect whose works reflect an appealing Pacific Northwest modernist theme. Some of his works include The Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, the Provincial Law Courts in Downtown Vancouver, the San Diego Convention Center, Napp Laboratories in Cambridge, England, the Canadian Chancery in Washington, D.C., California Plaza in Los Angeles, and most recently the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington.

The way he put different aspects of nature into his designs is inspiring. Bringing in certain elements such as the beam and post construction, variations of floor planes, the surrounding topography, viewing perspectives and light control. You can see it in each of the above images and his other works.
