Wim Crouwel is right when he says, “On the other hand, finding your way now is much more difficult than my time”. Finding your way and making a name for yourself nowadays is difficult. It seems every way you turn there is someone doing the same thing that you’re doing. That should not be discouraging however. Sticking to what you love should be easy and spending time doing it should be even easier.

Although Crouwel is referring to young designers, the advice here is still quite relevant all designers.

For the longest time this video by Air France titled No Excuses, has been in my post queue. The track itself is really uplifting and shot after shot of the open water on a cloudy day just feels soothing. If you don’t have the album I’d recommend it.

Ever since I worked on Bikecar several years ago, I’ve followed Aaron Draplin’s work. Not just because of the quality of design but because of his passion. He is really just dedicated in his tastes and everything around him. Now that I’m here in Portland I’d really like to sit down and have a conversation with him or just look through all of his collections. I hate to admit it but when he opened up that top drawer filled with all of those beautiful packaging pieces, I wanted to cry.

The Power of Perseverance

Once in a while—or all the time for some people—we tend to give up so easily on things we think we can’t do. The truth really is that we can do them, we just tell ourselves we can’t. Did you want to learn to play guitar, become a designer or architect but gave up? For me it was learning how to build a website that I quite frankly had no clue how to do. Time, time is your friend. How you form your relationship with time is also key. Fortunately I realized early on making something happen takes time and you have to just do it.

Let me say that one more time—believe in yourself and just do it.

Sure it sounds like a line out of a self-help book, but really we all really need to read it. Sometimes its not just that we think we can’t do things its that other people tell us we can’t do them. The next time someone tells you something isn’t possible, question why. I would not be surprised if the majority their reason falls onto the laziness side rather than the technical. Laziness isn’t your friend but time is. Tame your time because the technical is only a small puddle between you and your goal.

What I’m trying to say is that the guy in this video, Og De Souza, didn’t give up skateboarding just because he doesn’t have the same ability to use his legs as we do. He persevered. He said the hell with those who think I can’t do it and the thoughts of my own thinking I can’t do it. I can’t think of a more perfect example than this to fuel your fire driving you forth with your next goal or project.

Bobby Solomon talks about the starting of his blog The Fox is Black and his career on Creative Mornings in Los Angeles. It’s always nice to hear how fellow designers have come to their career choice. When starting out I thought I wanted to just shoot photos but was pulled towards design. As of now I’ve found myself interested in some areas of development, but at the same time wanting to just focus on design.

Who’d have thought melting ice could be so compelling to watch? I sure didn’t, but now I believe it. Andrey Muratov brings ice to life through beautifully composed timelapse video. The audio also fits tightly with each cut and is by Nebulo – Plasticmare.

As I’ve mentioned in the past that Massimo Vignelli is one of my favorite designers. Vignelli’s talk is approximately an hour long and filled with a lot of history from Vignelli’s career. The presentation is from OFFSET in 2009. Each time I listen to him talk, I’m reminded of perhaps the most important thing to remember with design: Good design lasts longer.

While humorous and informative, we’re shown how some of the support systems work elevating the talent and the set design.

EF Language School Commercials

The typography of these two commercials is great. It was done by Albin Holmqvist while Gustav Johansson directed. Both the type and the quality of the video itself makes me want to go there. If anyone is curious, I believe these commercials were shot with a Canon 5d Mark II.

At this point, denying what humans have done to Earth is unavoidable. We’ve all heard the speech, but I think this movie really brings it home. The visuals are stunning and the message is clear as ever. The full movie comes in around an hour, but it is well worth the watch.

The Sartorialist is fashion blog run by blogger/photographer Scott Schumann out of New York. In this mini documentary we see Schumann hitting the streets to take photos of people who are fashionably interesting. The video acts as a great way to show the process behind Schumann’s work. I find the way that he approaches his subjects particularly interesting.

In this video Chase Jarvis and crew set out on a shoot atop the mountains of Telluride, Colorado and ended the day with a handful of hearty laughs and this priceless quote:

The Printing Process of Field Notes

Coudal Partners has come forth this video that takes you from the printing process of the limited-edition Raven’s Wing Field Notes all the way to the packaging. Its a shame this version is sold out, I would have really liked to get my hands on a few.

The covers are printed by Flywheel Letterpress in Freeport, Illinois on an American-made, black-and-charcoal duplex linen cover stock from Neenah. The charcoal-colored inside cover is printed in black on a vintage offset press. The graph paper is lined in grey and come in 3-packs tightly shrink-wrapped with an orange, French Paper Co. band.

Chase Jarvis and the Nikon D7000

Remember back when Chase Jarvis launched the Nikon D90 campaign? Well Nikon and Chase Jarvis have done it again with the new Nikon D7000 project. The first campaign they did was extremely successful and led the way for future campaigns by companies like Canon to do the same. I don’t doubt that this one will be just as successful if not more.

Nikon called up Chase Jarvis and said, “Chase-san. We have a new camera…” (I got a kick out of the “Chase-san” part the first go-around, and I’m definitely laughing about it again). They gave him cameras, the creative freedom and a budget to work with. Chase grabbed his friends and team and took to the road to make it happen. I’m especially blown away by the images that were produced from this shoot. Almost all of the images have a beautiful and tasteful sun flare which really makes me melt.
