Airport Runway Screenprints

We’ve seen infographics of airports but this is the first Airport runway poster that I’ve ever seen. This self-initiated screenprint project was created by Jerome Daksiewicz which features runway patterns of airports around the world. Really enjoying the minimal detail approach. Jerome has the prints for purchase on his website.

Swissted: Where Punk Rock meets Swiss Modernism

Swissted is the next greatest thing to hit the web besides Designspiration. It is an ongoing project by graphic designer Mike Joyce and also the owner of Stereotype design in New York City. Mikes love for punk rock music and Swiss design is what allows these two near polar opposites to meet. Each poster reflects the traditional international typographic style posters, each sized to the standard swiss kiosk dimensions of 35.5″ by 50″. The typeface used of course is Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk Medium.

Amsterdam Sinfonietta Posters

Rejane Dal Bello is a Netherlands based designer, originally from Rio de Janeiro, that works at Studio Dumbar. These posters were designed for Amsterdam Sinfonietta, an independent musical ensemble, consisting of mostly young musicians. The series of posters were designed over two years.

The abstractness of the illustration on these posters really makes me wish I had prints for my wall. Guy Lalumière designed these in 1966 for the World Fair Exposition in 1967—Expo 67.

Showcased Work: Old Spice Campaign Stats Poster

If you’ve heard recently, the Old Spice guy Isaiah Mustafa is back. His return makes this the perfect time to share with you a project I completed a few months ago for fun. The goal was to create a refined and informative infographic. At the time of creating this, the Old Spice campaign entitled “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” was in full swing. The campaign was led by Isaiah Mustafa and driven by the great Wieden + Kennedy creative agency. The results of the campaign relative to sales and the social media buzz, exponentially exceeded expectations and ultimately marked the campaign as one of the most successful in history.

The question was how do I design for this. Do I pair the design with what the brand has established or do I take an alternate route? At the time I was heavily inspired by the international typographic style and Massimo Vignelli. This explains for the minimal layout and geometric line angles similar to the New York City subway maps. However, this direction didn’t come immediately. I toyed around with various versions that were far from being relevant to Old Spice or being easily readable. This version however, felt the most appropriate. Bringing in a few elements such as the cutting-off of the logo and Old Spice related colors, helped reflect current establishments that the brand already uses.

The data was collected by the marketing firm, Symphony IRI.

Showcased Work: Typefaces of the World Poster

Typefaces of the World was a poster I created to show the typefaces that are most commonly used in a lot of today’s design. The poster includes information for each typefaces such as the year it was made, the location and the typographer. These 50 typefaces were chosen based on popularity and usefulness in present design. It was by mere coincidence that the typefaces were nearly split 50/50 between Europe and the United States—the most prominent locations for typographers were in these areas.

Initially the poster was created as an experiment and excuse to explore new methods of working in Illustrator that I hadn’t attempted before. I’d seen info graphics on Behance where data was fanned-out but evenly spaced—there was no way this was done by hand. It took a while but after figuring out the method of doing it where you can essentially paste in your data with tab-formatting, the poster was on its way. I’d like to play with this further to really nail it down because there aren’t any tutorials on there on creating a dynamic way to showcase information in this way. Hint: its not type on a path.

Stumbled across these really clean Star Trek posters by Mondo that I really enjoyed. The type is nicely set and the colors sing. The posters were available for a while in 18×24″ screen prints but I don’t believe they are anymore.

Binary and the Brain: The Pioneers Poster

In this poster, Binary and the Brain were paying homage to some of the world’s greatest pioneers from the NASA photograph archives. The poster is printed on 100% recycled, heavy, matte stock and can be purchased from their website.

Serif + Sans Serif Classification

It’s a beautiful thing to see typefaces classified and grouped for us to quickly look at from day to day. Particularly I’ve found the Periodic Table of Typefaces to be most helpful. For nearly a year I had it as my desktop background. Every time I looked at my desktop I was looking at type and studying. You can grab the full desktop version here.

These next posters by Martin Plonka are all about Serif and Sans-serif classification. Besides being a beautiful set, I could see them being very useful in classrooms to help students understand the categories of type as well as seeing examples of the type in application. These posters are somewhat small but Martin covers these categories:

Swiss Poster Collection: 1971 to the present

Cargegie Mellon University is the home to a very large Swiss Poster Collection. There are more than 300 works ranging from 1970 to present time. This collection was established by Swiss graphic designer Ruedi Ruegg and Professor Daniel Boyarski.

The Collection contains work by designers such as Max Bill, Paul Bruhwiler, Ruedi Kulling, Herbert Leupin, Josef Muller-Brockmann, Roger Pfund, Ruedi Ruegg, Niklaus Troxler, Wolfgang Weingart, Kurt Wirth, R. Schraivogel, Cornel Windlin, and many others.

Andrio Abero Designspiration

I was sifting through holiday gift ideas and stumbled upon Andrio Abero’s work. These posters, my favorites, are some of his best. The typography and intermixing of detail within really sets the style and feel of these posters.
