The Social Network Soundtrack

November 9th, 2010

If you haven’t seen The Social Network yet, I highly recommend it. Initially I was skeptical—I mean how good could a movie about Facebook possibly be? The answer is, truly inspiring. There is something about seeing success happen that triggers the “let’s make things happen” part of my brain. Fewer and fewer movies give me anything close to that level of inspiration.

Not only is the movie worth the watch, the soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is also worth the download. Luckily for us the sampler is available for free and the full 19-track album is only five bucks.

Nueva Forma Listening Pleasures #9

October 25th, 2010

Nueva Forma transitions us into the Fall season with their recent Listening Pleasures release, Episode 9. Not only are we getting a very ripe musical curation, but they’ve also made four of the tracks available for free!

You can grab those here—thank Nueva Forma for that.

In this episode you’ll hear familiar tunes by the great Miori, Airliner, A Gap Between and many more. If this new listening pleasure doesn’t have you grooving within the first few minutes, then you can revoke my license to share music.

Songs for Singing + Ghostland Observatory

October 19th, 2010

The one group that truly needed to be in Songs for Singing, was Ghostland Observatory. This funky, electronic, rock group is out of Austin, Texas. Although their first album was a hit or miss, I assure you their second and third are as I’ve rocked out to them many times. Aaron Kyle Behrens mans the vocals and guitar while Thomas Turner is on the drums, synth and provides backup vocals.

The songs compiled here are from two different albums; Paparazzi Lightning (2006) and Robotique Majestique (2008). A third album is supposedly in the works.

Pinscape: Transitory Timing

October 12th, 2010

I’ve always enjoyed music that you can turn on and let run all day as you lie on your back watching the ceiling fan spin. Pinscape’s Transitory Timing is that. The recently released 7-track EP showcases the creator, Matthew Flook’s addiction to shoegaze music of the early ’90s. Almost immediately you can feel the vibe from the tracks as they uplift you. Oddly enough in the description of this EP, it describes the gloomy weather of the Pacific Northwest and I find it to be quite true. The moody weather of Seattle and the atmosphere of Transitory Timing go hand in hand.

This artist is brought to us by NuevaForma. You can snag this album and others here.

Miori: I Have No Memory of This Place

September 28th, 2010

Just when I think my taste in music is tightening, it becomes broadened by the great sounds produced by artists whom I’ve never heard. Aaron Sjorgren is one of those artists. He creates under the alias of Miori and has a new album out called I Have No Memory of This place.

The songs take us on a journey through ambient soundscapes with atmospheric reverberations and graceful washes. Let yourself be taken away by these tracks or go get the full album here. This artist is brought to us by NuevaForma.

Tycho Live Band Photos + Seattle

September 28th, 2010

For anyone that missed Sunday’s Tycho show here in Seattle, it was awesome. I won’t say too too much (for those who may be going to the New York and Toronto shows), but definitely make them if you’re in either of the two areas. There are some new versions of different tracks, all of which were great.

I was surprised at how these photos turned out. The lighting was horrid—super bright lights that when on the band, turned them smurf blue. Since its been some time since I’ve shot any concert photos, I definitely have taken ISO expansion for granted. All of these new cameras capable of ISO up to 12,800 are catching my eye. I don’t mind some noise, but there certainly is a point when I draw the line. I can see a need to upgrade camera bodies sometime in the near future. Perhaps when the Canon 1D Mark V comes out I’ll upgrade to the 1D Mark IV. Until then the 1D Mark II will have to suffice.

Tycho Live in Seattle 9/26

September 21st, 2010

If you have plans for the weekend, you might consider canceling because Tycho and the full live band are in town. They will be playing live on Sunday, September 26 at The Triple Door in Downtown Seattle. The show is scheduled to start at 7:00PM but doors open at 5:00PM. You can get your tickets here. Last year had a great turnout at the Seattle Art Museum and I think this time there will be as well. I will be there hopefully shooting some photos of the band.

The live band consists of Zac Brown (frequent collaborator and guitarist for Dusty Brown) handling bass duties while Matt McCord is on drums. Scott Hansen is on some guitars and synth, Dusty Brown on guitar and Jessica Brown in on vocals I believe.

The Stuyvesants

August 13th, 2010

the stuyvesants
The Stuyvesants is a collaborative effort between music producer Allan Cole (Algorythm), and record collector Darien Victor Birks (Flwrpt). Both residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY. The two wanted to work together on a project where they could incorporate several of their talents in music and design. The name Stuyvesants became their moniker of which they collaborated on four major things: design, beat dig, produce amazing music, and most importantly just having fun.

Fortunately for us, their full album is free! It includes 25 hoppin’ tracks that will make you want to turn up that volume.

Songs for Singing + The Panic Division

June 21st, 2010

When I was first turned onto The Panic Division, I couldn’t get enough. The band has this electronic, synthpop sound that just pulls me in. The sound is almost like a hint of David Bowie with a dash of the 80s. That may not be the most descriptive so feel free to share your take. Also, beware of listening to these tracks on Youtube, you may be completely thrown off. The amazing sound that I know them as is ruined by a sound that seems all too similar to many other bands out there today.

If you’re in the mood for more beat-filled tracks, check out the last song called Legacy.

Since78: Imagine That! Volume 02

May 11th, 2010

Imagine That volume two is another clean cut mix by Brian Gossett with sing along themed tracks. That may sound corny but I really enjoy these tracks and I’m not a mom or a dad.
