Omaha Beach House

October 10th, 2012

Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects is the Auckland based architectural firm that designed this awesome house in Omaha Beach in 2007. The part that I like most about this house is the expansive views out over the water and the large deck.

    Omaha Beach is just north of Auckland! Not Australia. Don’t let the Aussie’s steal this one from us too! ;)

    @Tessa fixed! Sorry about that.

    My stepmother’s parents owned an Adobe themed place on Omaha beach for years – really wish they’d kept it, gorgeous beach and would’ve been the ideal location to build something like this…

    I walk my blue heeler dog on Omaha Beach most mornings, after dropping the kids off at the school bus stop. So it was a surprise to see it mentioned here.

    From an architectural point of view, Omaha has a real problem: the formerly wild and undeveloped shoreline is now blighted by rows of identikit modernist boxes. Most of them are empty during the week, and their owners driven up from Auckland at the weekend in their equally identikit late-model SUVs.

    Photographs of Omaha houses are usually tightly cropped, because the neighbouring box is often mere feet away. And to the casual observer, they all look similar to this one. Flat planes, lots of glass and wood, pale interiors …

    New Zealand architecture has been stuck in a rut for many years now, and nowhere is that more evident than Omaha, sadly.

    Still, if you’re walking along that gorgeous beach on a shimmering spring morning, there’s always the sea to look at.
